Award Winning Wedding Photography

Award Winning Wedding PhotographyAs a London wedding photographer, I’m often booked to work the same locations time and time again, so I’m constantly trying to keep the creative juices flowing and looking for new ways to create unique images. No two wedding albums should ever be the same – the photographs that are taken shouldn’t be similar just because they’re taken in the same place, they should be different because they’re based upon the bride and groom’s personality, and the specific weather conditions of the day. Even photographing a venue I’ve worked at 10 times before, I never quite know what to expect, and sometimes I even manage to surprise myself with a rare shot.

Acting as Hazel and Pietro’s Gaynes Park wedding photographer, I had taken some classic, timeless shots throughout the gorgeous scenic surrounds across the course of the day, and, as the sun was starting to set, I was getting my gear prepared for an evening of indoor pictures where the lighting conditions would be much more amenable. This particular evening, however, was just so stunning and so in keeping with Hazel and Pietro’s personality and the atmosphere of their wedding that I couldn’t resist hurrying them outside for some final shots. Although the sky appeared dark, there was still enough warmth of colour that the camera could easily pick up an eerie and romantic reddish-purple glow. With the bride and groom in sharp black and crisp white, the contrast was perfect, and this image received a Gold Award in the Avant Garde category at the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photography monthly competition.

Out of 67 entries in the Avant Garde category, this image was the only one deemed exceptional enough to be presented with a Gold Award. A Gold Award is given only to images ‘of the highest standard’, according to the SWPP, so it was a huge honour to receive this prestigious prize, and I felt like I’d not only done myself proud, but also Hazel and Pietro. I’m proud to say that this is one of the couple’s favourite photographs of their wedding day.
