The Painted Hall Greenwich – The Painted Hall in Greenwich which is often described as the finest dining hall in Europe has just been reopened to the public after having works to restore the paintings, you can see from the pictures what a magnificent venue this is and a beautiful back drop to the perfect wedding.
The last restoration was 50 years ago so the paintings had darkened from candle smoke and sweat throughout the years.
Paintings include nymphs and goddesses – as well as a camel, a crocodile, and an old sailor dressed as Winter. Amongst the clouds you will see George I, surrounded by Peace, Apollo, Time, Truth, Victory, America, Africa, Piety and Hercules with cupids, roses, coats of arms, naval weapons and billowing drapery, looked down upon by Queen Anne , who paid for most of the work.
It is designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawsmoor it was originally build for the Naval Veterans as an eating space hence the name.
Designs were submitted in 1698 with work being started 5 years later taking 19 years to complete, given the age of the building and painting it really is a jewel in the Greenwich crown.
Between 1824 and 1936 the building was used as an Art gallery to display Naval artwork, later after extensive works becoming an eating space for Naval personnel in 1939.
Today it is still used as a dining area for special occasions, grand events and of course weddings.
I will be shooting a wedding at the Painted Hall later today, the first day it has been opened after its restoration work, as you can see I couldn’t resist going along to have a look this morning at the amazing work that has been done and to get some shots before opening up to the public.
